39th Tour de l’Île | Street Closures Expected this Weekend
Approximately 40,000 cyclists will parade through the streets of Montreal this weekend for the 39th edition of the traditional Tour de l’Île. Several street closures are expected, but about fifteen passages for motorists will be in place along the route.
As Montreal prepares to host this major event once again, spokesperson Philippe Sabourin stated that the city has established itself as a globally recognized cycling destination in recent years. The event will take place in two stages, starting with the 25th Tour la nuit on Friday at 8 p.m. from Parc Jeanne-Mance. The route covers 24 kilometers through Plateau-Mont-Royal, Ville-Marie, and Sud-Ouest.
On Sunday, the Tour de l’Île will kick off at around 9:15 a.m. from Parc Jeanne-Mance, covering either 28 or 50 kilometers through various neighborhoods in Montreal. Street closures and parking restrictions will be in effect on both days, affecting routes throughout the city.
What Preparations to Make for the Tour de l’Île?
Despite the street closures, major arteries like Sherbrooke Street and the Ville-Marie Tunnel will remain open. Motorists are advised to avoid the Victoria Bridge and should plan alternate routes to navigate the city during the event.
Jean-François Rheault, CEO of Vélo Québec, emphasized the importance of fostering a bike-friendly culture through events like the Tour de l’Île. He mentioned that efforts are being made to minimize disruptions and ensure a smooth experience for participants and commuters.
How Will Public Transportation be Affected?
Public transportation services, including the REM and STM, will make accommodations for increased bike traffic during the Tour de l’Île. More bikes will be allowed on trains, and service frequency will be adjusted to accommodate cyclists participating in the event.
Overall, the Tour de l’Île promises to be a vibrant celebration of cycling culture in Montreal, with volunteers, cadets, and police officers ensuring the safety and efficiency of the event for all participants.
