An Arizona rancher in a battleground state is expressing frustration over President Biden’s decision to halt construction on the border wall, as he witnesses a surge of migrants crossing through his property. Jim Chilton, along with his wife Sue, own a vast cattle ranch that spans along the U.S.-Mexico border in Arivaca, Arizona. The Chiltons have been directly impacted by the abrupt halt in wall construction, which they attribute to the escalating border crisis.
During the Trump administration, more than 450 miles of border wall were built, including both new construction and the replacement of existing barriers. Some of this construction took place on the Chilton ranch, with plans to continue building. However, when President Biden took office in 2021, construction came to a sudden stop. Contracts were canceled, leaving a stretch of land on the Chilton ranch either open or with easily traversable Normandy barriers. Despite some limited construction under the Biden administration for repairs and small gaps, the Chiltons remain deeply dissatisfied with the current state of border security.
Jim Chilton, who spoke at the Republican National Convention in July, expressed his outrage over the decision to halt the wall construction. He firmly believes in the effectiveness of the border wall, describing it as 32 feet high with a solid five feet of metal on top, making it extremely difficult to breach. Chilton emphasized the durability of the wall, stating that each bollard contains cement inside, making it challenging to cut through. He firmly believes that the completion of the wall is crucial to securing the border and preventing illegal crossings.
Amid the Biden administration’s decision to cease wall construction, the southern border has experienced a surge in migrant apprehensions. While the numbers have decreased this year, Chilton has captured over 3,560 suspected illegal immigrants on cameras installed on his ranch. He described them as “serious hombres” who are often involved in illicit activities such as drug smuggling and human trafficking. Chilton emphasized the challenges faced by Border Patrol in apprehending these individuals, many of whom may be affiliated with criminal organizations like MS-13.
