In the recent UMBC poll conducted from Sept. 23 to Sept. 28, Democratic candidate Angela Alsobrooks is leading the race for Maryland’s U.S. Senate seat against Republican Larry Hogan. The poll revealed that 48% of likely Maryland voters would vote for Alsobrooks, while only 39% would vote for Hogan.

Alsobrooks, who currently serves as the Prince George’s County Executive, has received an endorsement from Vice President Kamala Harris, who is also the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee. On the other hand, Hogan, a former governor of Maryland, has expressed that he is not seeking or interested in the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, despite Trump’s expressed support for Hogan in the Senate race.

Hogan has stated that if elected as senator, he would support legislation to codify Roe v. Wade into law and has committed to only voting for Supreme Court nominees who can earn bipartisan support. He emphasized the importance of avoiding partisan gamesmanship when it comes to appointments to the Supreme Court and cabinet positions.

Despite Hogan’s political stances and history, the poll results indicate that Alsobrooks is leading the race, even though one in three voters may not be familiar with her. Maryland has traditionally leaned towards Democratic candidates in presidential elections, with the last Republican to win the state being George H.W. Bush in 1988.

Looking ahead to the 2024 presidential election, the poll also revealed that 57% of likely Maryland voters would cast their ballot for Vice President Kamala Harris, while only 35% would choose former President Donald Trump. The survey results have a margin of sampling error of +/- 3.3% for the sample of 863 likely Maryland voters.

The race for Maryland’s U.S. Senate seat is closely watched, with implications for the state’s political landscape and representation in the Senate. The endorsements, policies, and commitments of the candidates play a significant role in shaping voters’ decisions and the outcome of the election. As the campaign progresses, both Alsobrooks and Hogan will continue to engage with voters, address key issues, and make their case for why they are the best choice to represent Maryland in the Senate.
