Mars Girls Volleyball Secures Undefeated Season with 5-Set Victory over Freeport

In a thrilling match against Freeport, Mars Girls Volleyball secured an undefeated season with a 3-2 victory. The game took place on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at Freeport Middle School. Despite facing a tough Yellowjackets squad, Mars managed to finish the regular season with an impressive 14-4 overall record and a perfect 10-0 record in section games.

Coach Tami Caraway expressed her pride in the team’s performance, especially against a strong opponent like Freeport. The Planets had to work hard to secure the win, with CeCe Christy stepping up in the fifth set to deliver crucial kills and help the team secure victory.

Christy’s early kills in the final set allowed Mars to build a lead and eventually clinch the win with a score of 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 25-20, and 15-11. This victory was particularly significant as it marked Mars’ undefeated run in Section 2 play, a remarkable achievement for the team.

Despite Freeport’s valiant effort, injuries and setbacks hampered their performance. Coach Tom Phillips commended his players for their resilience and determination, even in the face of adversity. The team’s loss to Hampton earlier in the week had dashed their hopes of claiming a section title, but they remained focused on giving their best on the court.

Led by standout players like Alaina Whitlinger and Leah Schreckengost, Freeport put up a strong fight, winning the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead. However, Mars rallied in the fourth set, taking control of the game and maintaining their momentum to secure the win.

Gabi Weidemann’s exceptional setting skills and Rylee Wooldridge’s impressive 14 kills were instrumental in Mars’ victory. Lily Javor and CeCe Christy also contributed significantly to the team’s success, showcasing their talent and determination on the court.

As both teams look ahead to the playoffs, Mars’ confidence is soaring after their undefeated season. The win against Freeport serves as a testament to their skill and teamwork, setting the stage for a strong postseason performance. On the other hand, Freeport remains determined to overcome challenges and rely on their depth to make a playoff push.

With the regular season now behind them, both Mars and Freeport are gearing up for the playoffs, where they will face new challenges and opportunities to showcase their talent and determination on the volleyball court. The stage is set for an exciting postseason as these teams continue to strive for success and victory.
