Steve Bannon, a former White House aide and close ally of former President Trump, has been released from prison after serving a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress. Bannon, 70, left the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, according to federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson Kristie Breshears. He is expected to hold a news conference in Manhattan later in the day and will resume his “War Room” podcast.
Bannon was sent to prison in July after the Supreme Court denied his request to delay the sentence while he appealed his conviction. He was found guilty in 2022 of two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the Jan. 6 House Committee’s deposition and for withholding documents related to Trump’s alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
During a press conference in July, Bannon expressed his pride in beginning his prison term, calling himself a “political prisoner.” He stated that he was willing to stand up against what he viewed as tyranny from the Department of Justice, Nancy Pelosi, and Joe Biden.
His release from prison comes just a week before Election Day, where Trump is aiming to win against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and reclaim the White House. Bannon’s convictions were upheld by a federal appeals court panel in May, and he is now seeking a full court hearing for his case. His legal team argued that the congressional subpoena was invalid due to Trump’s executive privilege assertion, but prosecutors countered that Bannon had already left the White House and that executive privilege was never invoked during the committee’s proceedings.
Aside from this case, Bannon is also facing criminal charges in New York state court for allegedly deceiving donors who contributed money for a border wall. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of money laundering, conspiracy, fraud, and other offenses, with a trial scheduled for December.
As Bannon steps back into the spotlight following his release, his legal battles and political involvement continue to make headlines. Stay tuned for more updates on his ongoing legal proceedings and activities.
