The general election is just around the corner, with national, state, and local races all on the ballot for Tuesday. As we gear up for Election Day, it’s essential to know who the candidates are and what positions are up for grabs.
On the presidential front, there are nine candidates vying for the top spot. From Democrat Kamala Harris to Republican Donald Trump, and others like Libertarian Chase Oliver and Green Party’s Jill Stein, the options are diverse. It’s important to note that Robert Kennedy has dropped out of the race, leaving eight contenders in the running.
In addition to the presidential race, voters will also be selecting their representatives for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House. In Lafayette County, there’s a tight race between incumbent Rep. Trent Kelly and Democratic candidate Dianne Dodson Black for the 1st Congressional District seat.
Local races are also heating up, with seats on the Lafayette County School Board, the Justice Court bench, and three election commissioner positions all up for grabs. It’s a chance for the community to have their voices heard and make a difference in their local government.
With so many candidates in the running, it’s crucial to understand the voting process. In races with three or more candidates, a winner must receive over 50% of the votes to secure the seat. If no candidate reaches that threshold, a runoff between the top two contenders will take place on November 26th.
As we head into Election Day, remember to check your polling location and bring a valid ID. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., giving everyone ample opportunity to cast their vote. Let’s make our voices heard and participate in shaping the future of our community and country.
