A hiker who had been missing for more than six weeks was miraculously found alive in the Canadian wilderness earlier this week, as reported by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Sam Benastick, 20, was reported missing by his family on Oct. 19 after he didn’t check in following a 10-day solo camping trip he embarked on Oct. 7 in extremely cold winter conditions where temperatures dropped below 4 degrees Fahrenheit.
Benastick was discovered by two individuals traveling to the Redfern Lake Trail for work. They spotted him walking towards them, using walking sticks for support and a cut-up sleeping bag to keep his legs warm. They immediately took him to the hospital where police confirmed his identity as the missing camper.
According to Benastick, he had initially stayed in his car for a period of time before moving to a creek and then the mountain side where he camped for 10 to 15 days. He later relocated down the valley and built a camp and shelter in a dried-out creek bed before being spotted by the two men.
RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson expressed relief and gratitude, stating, “Finding Sam alive is the absolute best outcome. After all the time he was missing, it was feared that this would not be the outcome.” The RCMP thanked various agencies for their support during the search efforts, including the Canadian Rangers and volunteers with extensive knowledge of the backcountry in the area.
Saunderson further added, “The time, effort and resources put in to locate Sam from the time of notification he was missing was beyond measure. We are thankful for the great outcome.” A GoFundMe page was created by Benastick’s sister to assist with expenses related to finding him.
This incredible story of survival serves as a reminder of the unpredictable and dangerous nature of the wilderness, especially during harsh weather conditions. It also highlights the importance of being prepared and informed before embarking on any outdoor adventures, emphasizing the significance of proper gear, communication devices, and knowledge of the area.
The successful rescue of Sam Benastick is a testament to the dedication and hard work of search and rescue teams, as well as the unwavering support from the community. It is a heartwarming example of how teamwork, perseverance, and hope can lead to a joyful reunion against all odds in the face of adversity.
