Sustainability Practices at Yas Marina Circuit for Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2024
ABU DHABI, UAE, Dec. 6, 2024 – The Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2024 is just around the corner, and the organisers at Yas Marina Circuit are gearing up to showcase their commitment to sustainability once again. Ethara, the driving force behind the circuit’s green initiatives, has announced a range of practices that will be in full swing during the upcoming 16th edition of the race.
Aggreko Middle East: Official Sustainability Partner
In a bid to reduce carbon emissions at Yas Marina Circuit, Ethara has partnered with Aggreko Middle East, a global energy solutions provider. This partnership, which dates back to 2009, has now been extended with Aggreko Middle East becoming the Official Sustainability Partner for the upcoming Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The focus will be on optimizing emissions through the introduction of biodiesel, managing energy loads efficiently, and utilizing solar-supported battery storages during race week. With last year’s impressive results showing a 40% reduction in emissions compared to 2022, Ethara and Aggreko are set to build on this success in 2024.
Efforts to Reduce Food Waste and Plastic Usage
Apart from emissions, efforts to tackle food waste will also be a priority during the four-day event. Ethara will collaborate with various stakeholders to implement innovative methods in line with the government’s Ne’ma National Food Loss and Waste Initiative. This initiative aims to promote social responsibility among the thousands of visitors expected to attend the race weekend. Additionally, the circuit will be a plastic-free environment, ensuring sustainability across the Media Centre, Paddock, Pit Lane, and Team Villas.
Commitment to Sustainability and Recognition
Sustainability is at the core of Ethara’s strategic objectives, both on and off the track. The installation of LED lighting has significantly reduced power consumption by 30%, leading to a 60% decrease in emissions. With the introduction of a new solar car park project earlier this year, Ethara is on track to further reduce emissions by at least 20%. Their dedication to sustainable practices has been acknowledged by the FIA, awarding Yas Marina Circuit a 3-Star certification, the highest accreditation level in motorsport.
The Ethara Edge: Leading the Way in Environmental Stewardship
Ethara’s sustainability framework, ‘The Ethara Edge’, is built on four core pillars: responsible resource usage, maximizing water efficiency, building a balanced energy mix, and driving climate action. This framework is not only internally governed but also validated by global bodies like the International Standardisation Organization and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. By aligning with partners and industry leaders, Ethara continues to set the benchmark for environmental stewardship and climate change initiatives.
With a clear focus on sustainability, Yas Marina Circuit and Ethara are paving the way for a greener future in motorsport. As they gear up for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2024, their commitment to reducing carbon footprint and embracing eco-friendly practices sets a new standard for sustainability in the racing world.
