Deobra Redden, a Las Vegas man, has been sentenced to serve at least 26 years behind bars for a shocking attack on Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus. This terrifying attack took place on January 3, 2024, as Holthus was preparing to deliver Redden’s sentence in a separate felony battery case.
Sentenced to Prison
Redden, 31, pleaded guilty but mentally ill in September to attempted murder and other charges related to the attack on Judge Holthus. He was ordered to serve between 26 and 65 years in a Nevada prison for his actions. The judge, who testified that she feared for her life during the assault, suffered injuries but did not require hospitalization.
Mental Illness a Factor
According to Redden’s defense lawyer, Carl Arnold, Redden was not taking his prescribed medication to manage his diagnosed schizophrenia at the time of the attack. Arnold stated that Redden’s guilty plea reflected a struggle between accepting responsibility for his actions and acknowledging the impact of his untreated mental illness.
Emotional Testimony
During the trial, Redden expressed remorse for his actions but maintained that he did not intend to kill Judge Holthus. He mentioned in court that he was not a bad person and that his actions were not premeditated. Despite his claims, Redden will not be eligible for parole until sometime after 2050.
