Obviously, the shortest path between two points is a straight line. But, what if we are in space and you have to take into account the gravity of the planets and the movements of their orbits? In this case it happens that the most efficient route is not the shortest, but the one that is worth the maneuvers of gravity assist, that the ships were taking advantage of the push provided by the planets to speed up or slow down en route to your destination.
