HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The drummer for Grammy Award-winning rock group Alabama Shakes is currently in custody on child abuse charges.
Steven William Johnson, 35, was arrested Wednesday after being indicted on charges of torture, deliberate abuse and beating or willfully maltreating a child below the age of 18, news outlets reported.
It wasn’t clear if Johnson has an lawyer who could comment on the fees. Managers for the group didn’t immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
An arraignment date is set for April 7.
Johnson pleaded guilty in March 2020 to violating a domestic violence protection order in Limestone County. He also received a suspended sentence of a year in prison, with 24 weeks .
The Athens, Alabama-based group was on hiatus because 2018, when lead singer Brittany Howard chose to concentrate on her solo project.
