On Thursday, several Hollywood’s most prestigious guilds announced their nominations for films. This ended any hopes that some of the biggest box-office hits of last year, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” or “No Time to Die,” would join the best-picture Oscar race.
Producers Guild nominations can be used to predict which films will make it into the Academy Awards best picture field. The PGA Awards and film academy each use a preferential ballot to select 10 nominees. Their picks often overlap.
The top 10 films that are up for the Darryl F. Zanuck award, the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer’s Award, include “Being the Ricardos”, “Belfast”, “CODA,” and “Don’t Look Up.”
Each PGA nominee does not always make it to the best picture nomination. However, only one film (The Father) has made it to the Oscar field in the past three years after being left out by the PGA.
Producers who have nominated films such as “The Dark Knight”, “Deadpool,” and “Skyfall” are more likely than the academy to nominate large-budget winners. The Academy Awards are unlikely to be able to nominate films like “No Time To Die” or “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, which were overlooked by the PGA.
Five of the five nominees were streamers, despite the fact that the producers had nominated several big-budget films in “Dune,” which sold the most tickets. Netflix released “The Power of the Dog,” tick, tick… BOOM!” “Don’t Look Up” and “Don’t Look Up.” Apple supported “CODA” while Amazon Prime Video released “Being the Ricardos.” Warner Bros. “Dune” (Walter Bros.) and “King Richard,” were also simultaneously released on HBO Max.
The Directors Guild received their nominations later Thursday. The DGA Awards’ top honor is being presented to Paul Thomas Anderson (“Licorice Pizza”) Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”) Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) Steven Spielberg (“West Side Story”) Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”)
These nominees give an overview of the most likely Oscar nominees in directing and suggest that five films are favourites to win a best picture award. Every DGA-nominated film has received a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards in the past decade.
Campion, who was a DGA nominee in 1993’s “The Piano,” has been nominated twice by the guild’s top award. This is Spielberg’s 12th nomination by the Directors Guild. He also received the 2000 lifetime achievement award. He has won three times before.
The guild nominated four women for best first feature as a director. The nominees were: Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Lost Daughter”), Rebecca Hall (“Passing”), Tatiana Huezo (“Prayers for the Stolen”), Lin Manuel Miranda (“Tick, Tick… BOOM Michael Sarnoski”), Emma Seligman (“Shiva Baby”)
The nominations for Oscars opened Thursday, as the guild nominations started rolling in. This could indicate that the guild awards could have an even greater impact on this year’s virtual awards season. The Oscars are set for March 27, making it a longer one. February 8th will see the announcement of nominations for Academy Awards 94th.
In their Thursday nominations, the Writers Guild referred to many of these films.
The WGA Awards will award the best original screenplay with the following: “Being the Ricardos,”” “Don’t Look Up,” and “The French Dispatch.” The nominees to the best adapted screenplay category are “CODA,” Dune,” Nightmare Alley,” and “Tick, tick… BOOM!”
A few notable contenders were not eligible for WGA Awards. These included “Belfast”, “The Power of the Dog” or “The Lost Daughter”.
