NECESSARY: The Jets have not made the playoffs for 11 consecutive seasons in an NFL-worst eleven seasons. Their latest rebuilding is now entering its second year under coach Robert Saleh. For Joe Douglas, GM for the third time, this will be an important offseason. There are many holes in the roster, including at wide receiver, pass rusher and linebacker. Safety and cornerback are also needed. Douglas admitted that he will be aggressive in trying to make Saleh’s roster more competitive. This starts with Saleh having a lot of salary cap space and free agency. The Jets will focus on whether they bring back key players from previous seasons, such as Maye. Safety received the franchise tag last season, but he is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon which ended his season early. He is also dealing with legal issues following his DUI arrest and car accident in February 2021. Douglas seemed hesitant to bring him back. Crowder will likely be moving on after leading the team’s receptions in the last three seasons and being a solid slot receiver. New York will have to make a difficult decision about Berrios. Berrios was a key player in New York’s offense and was named an All-Pro kick returner. The asking price may be too high. Moses and Duvernay–Tardif were solid starters at the right end of the line. The Jets may want to ensure consistency in personnel for Zach Wilson’s second year as QB. Fatukasi, an emerging locker room leader and run-stuffing force, could make big bucks elsewhere.
