Ireland’s privacy watchdog, Meta, has issued a 17 million euro fine to Facebook’s parent company Meta for violating Europe’s privacy law. This is approximately $19 million.
Data Protection Commission has been looking into how Meta Platforms Inc. handled personal data in 12 data breach notifications that were sent between June 2018 and December 2018.
Tuesday’s statement by the agency stated that Meta did not have the necessary measures in place to protect EU users’ data.
The company stated in an email that the fine was for record-keeping practices dating back to 2018, which they have since updated. It is not about a failure of protecting people’s data. We take the GDPR’s obligations seriously and will be carefully considering this decision as our processes evolve.
The GDPR allows the Irish regulator to handle cross-border privacy cases for large tech companies with their European headquarters in Dublin. It investigated Meta for data and privacy violations and issued a $267 million fine to the company’s WhatsApp communications services for yet another violation of GDPR in September.
