You are certainly a victim of this when moving house: the number of your landline telephone line changes. Certain administrative procedures must be carried out when changing homes, such as electricity, gas, tracking your mail or various subscriptions to cancel. A new rule will make your life easier when it comes to what happens to your landline number.
Until December 31, 2022, each number starting with 01, 02, 03, 04 or 05 was necessarily associated with one of the five major zones surrounding the metropolitan territory. The user of the line had to use a number corresponding to his elementary dialing zone (ZNE), as indicated by Femme Actuelle.
Since January 1, 2023, the geographical constraints of landline numbers are no longer effective depending on your location. This follows the decision taken by the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (Arcep) in July 2019. Numbers starting with 01, 02, 03, 04 and 05 were associated with their reference territory, such as for example 02 for the North West region. This geographical constraint is no longer relevant.
You can keep your landline number if you move to mainland France. However, this new measure does not concern you if you live in an overseas region, as the Telecoms Regulatory Authority explains: “it is still not possible to keep your landline number by moving to another territory. ultramarine or in mainland France”.
