(Puerto Vallarta) Tony Finau turned in 66 (minus-5) and won the Mexico Open by three strokes ahead of Spaniard Jon Rahm on Sunday.
Finau had no bogeys in the final round at Vallarta Vidanta, where he finished second to Rahm. The American was not seriously challenged on the back nine.
Brandon Wu, also second last year, eagled on the sixth hole and birdied on the next hole to tie the lead. Finau responded with a birdie on the seventh flag, however, while Wu bogeyed on the eighth and double bogeyed on the 10th.
Finau finished the event with a minus-24 overall to edge Rahm, who shot 67 and had his chances to approach the top of the standings.
Rahm, however, failed to birdie on two par-5s. He made a bad tee shot on the 12th hole and a bad approach on the 14th flag.
Wu (68) settled for third as 21-year-old golfer Akshay Bhatia turned in a 70 to claim fourth spot alone.
It was Finau’s sixth career win on the PGA Tour. His title lifted him up to 11th in the world rankings.
Rahm was playing for the second time in three weeks after winning the Masters Tournament. He will not be present at the Wells Fargo Championship to take advantage of a two-week break before the PGA Championship.
By virtue of a 30th position, Taylor Pendrith (68) was the highest ranked Canadian in the tournament. His compatriot Michael Gligic (67) was 39th.
