Since February 2023, Franceinfo has launched its basket of 37 products whose price increase is observed over a period of one year. This basket, produced in partnership with France Bleu and NielsenIQ, had increased considerably in March 2023. Inflation reached 17.7% between March 2022 and March 2023. For the month of April, inflation seems to be stagnating with 17.6 %. Nevertheless, the food continues to increase.
In March 2023, this product basket was 106.25 euros in total. In April, it reaches 108.25 euros. But, how to explain this price increase even as inflation stabilizes? “We are starting to reach a plateau,” explains Emmanuel Cannes, price and inflation expert at NielsenIQ. “We are accumulating increases on certain increases which had already taken place in March-April 2022”, he explains then. In addition, for the month of April 2023, certain types of products saw their prices increase more than others. While private label and entry-level brands are seeing their prices decelerate, this is not the case for national brands. Indeed, in April 2023, the prices of national brands increased by 13.23%. Conversely, inflation on entry-level products rose from 19.37% in March 2023 year-on-year to 18.92% in April year-on-year. Moreover, this increase in the price of national brand products was foreseeable. Indeed, the negotiations between manufacturers and large retailers presaged a new price increase.
Among the branded products that increased in April, we find the two-litre cans of detergent from the Ariel or Le Chat brand. Pizzas from brands such as Sodebo saw an increase of nearly 15 cents over one year. Moreover, the basket does not cost the same amount in all departments.
