The distribution giant revealed the list of its stores that will be sold to Intermarché. According to Force Ouvrière, the group’s first union, 119 supermarkets are concerned, including 57 by the end of the year, reports franceinfo.
On Friday May 26, 2023, the Casino group, in debt to the tune of 6 billion euros, entered into a conciliation procedure. The distribution giant had decided to sell a hundred of its stores in order to fight against its economic weakening, caused by poor management and successive takeovers.
The 119 stores sold represent nearly 1 billion euros in turnover and employ more than 1,000 people. A colossal sacrifice which is however not enough. In order to completely pay off its debt, Casino will have to turn to the Czech businessman, Daniel Kretinsky, who has agreed to buy back shares in the company. He is already in possession of 10% of Casino’s capital.
