(Paris) Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, eliminated in the round of 16 in Berlin, missed an opportunity to get significantly closer to world No.1 Iga Swiatek, but still remains comfortably in second place, in the WTA ranking published on Monday .
While the Pole did not play in any tournament last week, Sabalenka lost in her second match at the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin, against Russian Veronika Kudermetova. Less than a week from Wimbledon, the 25-year-old Belarusian thus remains a good distance – almost 1000 points – from Swiatek, undisputed leader for more than a year.
Behind the Kazakh Elena Rybakina (3rd), the French Caroline Garcia, eliminated in the quarter-finals in Berlin, demoted her by one place (5th), in favor of the American Jessica Pegula (4th).
Although beaten in the final of the Birmingham tournament, the Czech Barbora Krejcíková, former world number one, is back in the top 10 (10th, 2).
Just ahead, her compatriot Petra Kvitová was full of confidence before Wimbledon, of which she is a double winner (2011, 2014), by winning a 31st title in Berlin. But the former world number two does not benefit from it in the standings since she had won a tournament at the same time last year (Eastbourne).
Her opponent in the final on Sunday, the Croatian Donna Vekic, however, took the opportunity to enter the top 20 (20th, 3), and even approached her best ranking (19th, in November 2019).
