One only has to look at the long list of models that have withdrawn in recent years to see how the conventional subcompact car is dying.

Currently, only three models operate in this segment prized for its affordability: the Kia Rio, the Mitsubishi Mirage and the Nissan Versa. The Rio will soon be a thing of the past. The Korean manufacturer has confirmed the end of its production after our colleagues from The Car Guide have flushed out the news.

The one that has long been considered one of the best of its horde will drop its flag in December, leaving behind a gap that it has filled for 22 years in Kia’s Canadian lineup.

Retailed at $19,909 and offered only as a hatchback since 2021, this Rio powered by a small 1.6 L four-cylinder (120 hp) symbolizes a size and simplicity that are disappearing in the face of the unbridled increase in crossovers and SUVs. It will therefore be up to the Seltos subcompact crossover, offered at $27,809, to appease its customers. One more barrier that stands in front of the buyer looking to get a good affordable vehicle.
