Developed in close collaboration with experts in the philanthropy sector and representatives of HEC Montreal, the certificate in philanthropic management from the University of Montreal brings together philanthropy, communication and management. The first French-speaking university program in this field in Quebec, this specialized 10-course certificate is combined with initial training in a host of fields: management, health, social sciences, communications, sport, culture, community action, etc. The training is aimed at people wishing to acquire the knowledge and skills required to exercise the role of administrator or professional within professional associations, non-profit organizations, charities, foundations or in the sector of social responsibility in private companies.
Among the optional courses in the microprogram in management of cultural organizations at HEC Montréal is the course Philanthropy and management of cultural enterprises. Added in 2013, it covers the issues of philanthropic and financial management of non-profit organizations operating specifically in the arts sector. It covers, among other themes, global traditions of philanthropy; philanthropic revenue issues; political dynamics; strategic collaboration with artists, collectors and patrons; major campaigns; human resource management with volunteers; the issues of benefit events; planned giving and fundraising ethics.
All year round, the education committee of the Quebec section of the Association of Professionals in Philanthropy (AFP), dedicated to the development of these professionals, offers numerous conferences aimed at meeting the needs of both new professionals in philanthropy only the most seasoned. She also organizes live webinar broadcasts to allow people sharing similar concerns to continue their conversations and network. With HEC Montréal, the Conseil des arts de Montréal and the Canadian philanthropy research network PhiLab as partners, the Philanthropic Conversations in Culture bring together philanthropy professionals and members of the cultural community to encourage exchanges and the transmission of experiences. By circulating best practices, they aim to encourage the excitement of philanthropy in Montreal and Quebec. Activities include free exchange forums, i.e. discussions to reflect on current events and share thoughts and other concerns, as well as co-development groups focusing on problem solving.
