(Newark) New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton and forward Tomas Nosek will be out indefinitely after both underwent surgery this week.

Hamilton underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn left pectoral muscle he injured Tuesday against the New York Islanders.

Nosek underwent surgery Wednesday for his right foot. The forward was injured against the Arizona Coyotes on October 13 and missed 10 games earlier this season.

Hamilton leads Devils defensemen in points, and is fourth in the NHL in points with five goals and 11 assists in 20 games.

Hamilton was placed on injured reserve, retroactive to last Tuesday.

Simon Nemec was recalled from the school club.

Defender Brendan Smith was suspended without pay for two games by the NHL, due to a stick.

The league made the announcement Friday, a day after Smith slashed Philadelphia Flyers forward Travis Konecny ​​in the third period.

Konecny ​​double-checked Smith as he skated towards the Devils bench. The defender responded with a violent blow with his stick.

Smith was punished two minutes for his actions during the match.
