(Washington) Troy Lesesne will replace Wayne Rooney as D.C. United head coach, two months after being fired by the New York Red Bulls.
The 40-year-old has agreed to a three-year contract, D.C. United said Wednesday.
Lesesne took over from Gerhard Struber at the helm of the Red Bulls on May 8, when the team was in last place with just one win, four defeats and six draws for nine points. The Red Bulls, however, made the MLS playoffs finishing eighth in the Eastern Conference, and defeated Charlotte FC in the first round before losing to Cincinnati FC.
Lesesne was replaced by the former coach of Hertha Berlin, Sandro Schwarz, at the head of the New York team.
Rooney, a former England star, was named head coach of DC United in July 2022. He was fired on October 7, after the team’s final match. D.C. United went 10-10-14 in MLS in his only full season at the helm, and the club missed the playoffs for a fourth straight campaign, tying the record of team established between 2008 and 2011.
Rooney was hired four days later as head coach of Birmingham, in England’s second division, and was fired on January 2 after the team posted two wins, nine losses and four draws.
