The flight back from vacation turned into a disaster for a Swiss woman. According to the airline, she did not take her outbound flight. A flaw in the system is to blame.

When a Swiss tourist wanted to fly back to her homeland after a short vacation in Malta, the Swiss airline Swiss refused her the return flight. The reason: Apparently the woman didn’t show up for her outbound flight. “ Blick.ch ” reports.

The affected passenger, Christina Ueberschlag from Lucerne, had booked a weekend trip to Malta. Although she was able to fly to Malta without any problems, she encountered difficulties when she wanted to fly from Malta back to Switzerland.

Ueberschlag wanted to check in online for the return flight, but couldn’t find her booking. According to “Blick”, Swiss claimed that she had not taken the outward flight and therefore the return flight was automatically forfeited.

Despite evidence, including photos from Malta and her boarding pass, the Swiss airline maintained its position and claimed that Ueberschlag’s flight was not registered in the system. “Swiss customer service told me that I couldn’t have flown there because it wasn’t noted in the system,” the woman told “Blick.ch”.

Ueberschlag, who had an urgent appointment, was forced to buy a new ticket for the return flight. Shortly before departure, she received a message from Swiss that her flights could not be rebooked in time. An apology was expressed, but no alternative solution was offered.

Swiss later admitted that there was an error in the system and that Ueberschlag’s boarding pass was probably not captured and registered correctly during boarding. Swiss promised a refund of the 279 euros for the new ticket.

If the flight is canceled or even brought forward by an airline within the EU, you as a passenger can request a refund. The basis for this is the EU Passenger Regulation.

According to ADAC, guests can claim compensation if the EU flight is “cancelled less than fourteen days in advance”. Depending on the flight distance, guests are entitled to “200 to 600 euros”. According to ADAC reports, this regulation also applies to business trips.
