It was only at Pentecost that right-wing extremists used the melody of the song in a posh bar on the island of Sylt to shout their anti-human statements such as “Foreigners out” and “Germany for the Germans”.
It is not the first incident in which Italian musician Gigi D’Agostino’s global hit underpins right-wing chants. Events such as at a harvest festival in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2023 are now making the rounds on social media. The actual translation of the song title is all the more ironic: “Love always” is what it says, as Gigi D’Agostino has now made clear.
According to the musician, Gigi D’Agostino’s party hit is all about love, as he told Spiegel in an interview. When asked, D’Agostino said: “My song “L’amour toujours” is about a wonderful, big and intense feeling that connects people. It is the power of love that makes me celebrate.”
The text is clear: it’s about having no choice in participating in the life of your loved one and dreaming about being with each other every day and every night – no matter how long your loved one makes you wait for it .
For the party guests who turned the song about love into a song about hate and exclusion, their actions are likely to have severe consequences. The line “I just don’t care what you’ve done in your life” – loosely translated: “I don’t care what you’ve done in your life” – is unlikely to hold up in court. State security is currently investigating and accusing those involved of incitement to hatred and the use of unconstitutional symbols.
