Sylt is known as a holiday destination for the well-heeled, but can you also go on holiday there without spending a lot of money? The island attracts wealthy visitors, but that doesn’t mean it’s unaffordable for average earners.

There are plenty of luxury hotels on Sylt, but there are also inexpensive apartments available, sometimes of course you need a bit of luck or an early booking.

But even if booked at short notice, there are still various offers in July. On “Booking.com”, for example, you can find a small holiday apartment for a family of four for around 1,400 euros per week in the high season. A luxurious holiday home with a thatched roof, on the other hand, can cost up to 11,000 euros per week.

A comparison of the booking portals shows: a vacation to Sylt is possible even with a moderate budget. Of course, there are big price differences depending on whether you book in high season or low season.

Prices in many restaurants have increased everywhere. That’s why it’s true today more than ever: eating out on Sylt is often more expensive than anywhere else. This is not only due to the wealthy guests, but also due to the island location, which increases the costs of delivery, storage and staff.

A look at the menus shows that good food has its price: in the Culinarium restaurant in Westerland, a pollock fillet with fried potatoes costs 30 euros, and a Wiener schnitzel made from veal costs 30 euros.

But there are also cheaper options: The Twisters beach bar offers a cheeseburger for around 12 euros. If you’re willing to do it yourself, you’ll often get a cheaper vacation. There are discount stores such as Aldi and Lidl on the island, all of which are easily accessible. Prices are generally the same as on the mainland.

Sylt can be reached by train, car train, ferry and plane. The Sylt Shuttle transports cars, motorcycles and mobile homes. The ferry connects the island of Rømø with the port of List on Sylt.

The ferry trip is cheapest if the car stays on the mainland. Cars can be parked inexpensively at the departure port. Deutsche Bahn offers regular connections via Hindenburgdamm, and it’s worth looking for bargains and promotions here too.

Overall, it can be said that Sylt can be quite affordable, depending on how you want to spend your vacation. Whether it’s an expensive luxury vacation or an affordable break – both are possible.
