The German equestrian relay team will not spend the night in the Olympic Village during the Olympic Games. Instead, they will sleep in the Lidl headquarters.

The German equestrian team will not be staying in the Olympic Village during the Summer Games in Paris. Riders and the delegation of the German Olympic Committee for Equestrian Sports (DOKR) will instead sleep at the headquarters of Lidl France.

“The long travel times between the Olympic Village and our competition venue prompted us to choose accommodation close to Versailles,” said DOKR Managing Director Dennis Peiler.

The equestrian competitions will be held in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles. The German team, led by double Olympic champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, is therefore based in the new Lidl headquarters in Châtenay-Malabry, southeast of Versailles, as Peiler explained. The journey time for the 20 kilometers is around 40 minutes.

“Basically, we would always prefer the Olympic Village, because every Olympic participant should have the unique experience in the company of the international sports family,” said Peiler.

“That was also an important reason why we chose the Olympic Village as our accommodation in London and Rio. Another reason was that the travel times between the accommodation and the competition venue were manageable.” But that was completely different in Paris. “The long travel times prompted us to choose accommodation near Versailles,” explained the head of the German delegation.
