Hardly anyone expects their valuables to be stolen on an airplane. Nevertheless, one man tells how he himself became a victim of theft and prevented a crime.

“I was robbed during my flight,” reports a man on Reddit. The affected traveler says he was on his way to Hong Kong when he discovered that much of his money and credit cards had been stolen.

According to the Reddit user, the money was stolen from his wallet, which he had kept safely in different compartments. In addition, two of his cards had disappeared, and on one of them he discovered a failed transaction for 6,000 HKD (around 700 euros). “I couldn’t believe what had happened,” the man wrote. He had “never experienced anything like this before.” He only noticed the theft after landing in Hong Kong and checking into his hotel.

However, when the traveler reported the incident to the airline, they refused to take responsibility, arguing that it was not their job to ensure the safety of passengers’ personal belongings.

The passenger in question reported another theft on his return flight, during which he witnessed another passenger being robbed. He observed a woman falling asleep next to him, whereupon the man sitting directly in front of her helped himself to her backpack, which was positioned under his seat.

“When she woke up and checked that everything was OK, I asked her if anything was missing. She said her money was missing. I told her that the man in front of her had taken it,” the traveler claims. The airline then took care of the two of them.

Back in 2023, a case in China made headlines. A man was accused of stealing 21,000 euros in cash from airline passengers. A spokesperson for the airline Scoot confirmed the incident. “Our flight attendants were alerted by a passenger to a suspected theft on the plane and informed the airport police,” he said, according to CNN.
