Star Trek Discovery: Series Finale After 5 Seasons

The final episode of the fifth season of Star Trek Discovery has brought an end to the beloved science-fiction series after five seasons of space exploration and thrilling missions. How does it all wrap up for Michael and the rest of the crew?

This week, Paramount+ added the last episode of Star Trek Discovery season 5 to its lineup, concluding the storyline of the Progenitors and the series itself. As we delve into this article, the studios have made the decision to cancel the sci-fi series after five years of dedicated service, prompting the teams to return to the studio to film this conclusion. So, what’s the verdict?

Back to the Origins of Star Trek
In episode 10 of season 5, the Discovery crew faces numerous dangers as they are attacked head-on by the Breens and must buy time for Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) to escape from the mysterious structure where the power of the Progenitors resides. The ship’s captain discovers a strange and technological world. After a showdown with Moll (Eve Harlow) and forcing her to surrender, the two young women follow the clues and come across a control screen. Through the various tests she has undergone in previous missions, Michael manages to decipher the code and meet one of her creators.

She learns that she is the chosen one and can possess unprecedented power and technology, capable of creating and destroying life. This technology is what created the entire Star Trek universe, its rich and diverse planets, and its inhabitants. Unwilling to leave such power in human hands, the young woman decides to rid herself of it. Returning to the ship, she discovers that Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) and his crew have sent the Breens to distant corners of the galaxy. It’s a successful new mission for the Discovery!

The Starfleet members celebrate at the wedding of Saru (Doug Jones) and President T’Rina. Book (David Ajala) and Michael reaffirm their love and embark on a new mission together, inspired by Dr. Kovitch. The series finale also reveals a major revelation: the character played by David Cronenberg is actually Agent Daniels of the USS Enterprise! This character was previously portrayed by Matt Winston in the series aired between 2001 and 2005.

Passing the Torch
A jump forward in time shows Michael decades later, with graying hair. She is now retired and living peacefully with Book in their home. Having become an admiral in the meantime, she has a son who is about to become a Captain. It’s a moment for her to give him valuable advice and reminisce about the good times aboard the Discovery. It is revealed that Tilly is still a professor at the Academy. Michael prepares for one last mission aboard the Discovery. She must take her ship to the deepest reaches of the universe where it will either be destroyed or reshaped (the outcome remains unknown). Alone, the Admiral boards the ship and converses with Zora about the past years. While the fate of other characters in the series is left uncertain, viewers can bid farewell to the Discovery as it receives a guard of honor.
