Porsche Unveils First Road Hybrid 911: The T-Hybrid

Porsche has revealed its very first road-going hybrid 911. The 911 GTS T-Hybrid is not rechargeable and aims to limit its weight gain. It boasts a combined power output of 541 hp with a torque of 610 Nm.

The iconic Porsche 911 has finally received an electrified version, much to the apprehension of many brand enthusiasts. The new 992.2 GTS model now features a hybrid powertrain, following the trend set by almost the entire Porsche lineup. While the 718 Cayman and Boxster models have yet to go electric, they are set to be replaced by a fully electric model by 2025.

Porsche had delayed electrifying the 911, fearing that it would compromise its handling by adding extra weight. This is likely why the GTS version of the restyled 911 type 992 has opted for a non-rechargeable hybrid engine, rather than a plug-in hybrid. Currently, this is the only version of the 911 to embrace electrification. The base Carrera, the only other variant in the 992 phase 2 lineup, remains purely combustion-powered.

The T-Hybrid system in the 911 GTS manages to limit the weight increase to just over 50 kg compared to the previous model, resulting in a curb weight starting from 1595 kg (DIN). However, this is achieved by removing two seats from the standard 911 Coupe, with the 2+2 configuration now offered as a free option.

Despite only a minor increase in power from the previous version to 485 hp and an identical torque of 570 Nm, the new engine, assisted by the electric motor, delivers a combined output of 541 hp and 610 Nm of torque. This enables the 911 Carrera GTS Coupe to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds, a significant improvement over the previous model. The top speed remains at 312 km/h.

The 911 GTS is available in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (mandatory for the Targa model) and now comes with a PDK gearbox due to its hybridization. It was one of the last classic 911 versions to offer a manual transmission as an option. The design changes are subtle, with updates to the front and rear bumpers, as well as unique features like the five vertical active cooling vents on each side.

The revamped 911 starts at €131,700 for the non-hybrid Carrera Coupe and €174,900 for the GTS version. Despite its hybrid powertrain, the GTS model incurs the maximum €60,000 eco-tax imposed in France. Additionally, the GTS variant will also face a weight-based eco-tax due to its curb weight exceeding 1600 kg.
