Exciting Announcement: New Swimming Pools Set to Open in Berkshire Town this Summer
In a thrilling development for residents of a Berkshire town, two brand-new swimming pools are scheduled to open just in time for the summer season. The eagerly anticipated pools, located at Rivermead Leisure Centre in Reading, will be unveiled to the public on 17 June.
The state-of-the-art facilities at the centre will include an impressive 82ft (25m) pool, a dedicated teaching and diving pool, and a fun-filled splashpad area designed especially for children. It took a total of 12 days to fill the pools with approximately 1,700,000 litres (374,000 gallons) of water, showcasing the scale of this ambitious project.
This initiative forms part of Reading Borough Council’s substantial £40m investment in enhancing leisure facilities within the town. The leisure centre has already opened its gym, studio, and soft play area back in July 2023, with the new swimming pools marking the latest addition to its offerings.
Adele Barnett-Ward, the council’s lead for leisure and culture, expressed her excitement about the upcoming opening, stating, “We are now just days away from delivering on our promise of more new pools in Reading, and I’m sure residents are as excited as I am at the thought of being able to enjoy the new and improved facilities over the summer break.”
The primary eight-lane pool features a partially-movable floor that can be adjusted from poolside level to 5.9ft (1.8m) deep, catering to a wide range of activities such as rehabilitation exercises and water aerobics. Additionally, the second pool, designated for teaching purposes, boasts a dive tower and a springboard for added enjoyment.
In addition to the pools and splashpad area, the leisure centre will offer cutting-edge accessible changing facilities and two designated spectator seating sections for the convenience of visitors. While the council retains ownership of the centre, day-to-day operations are managed by Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL) under the brand Better.
