Senators Face Decision on Qualifying Offer for Erik Brannstrom
In a crucial decision looming for the Ottawa Senators, the future of defenseman Erik Brannstrom hangs in the balance. Acquired back in 2019 as part of the Mark Stone trade, Brannstrom has yet to reach the level of impact the Senators had hoped for.
With new GM Steve Staios looking to make changes, it remains uncertain whether the Senators will extend Brannstrom his required qualifying offer this summer. Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch reports that the team is still deliberating on this crucial decision.
Despite playing a career-best 76 games this season and notching three goals and 17 assists, Brannstrom’s performance may not be enough to secure a lucrative contract in arbitration. With Ottawa already committing over $27MM to six defensemen for next season, the question arises whether allocating an additional $2MM to Brannstrom is the best move for the team.
The looming decision is further complicated by the need to fill roster spots and potential moves in the trade market. As the June 30th qualifying offer deadline approaches, the Senators must weigh their options carefully in determining Brannstrom’s future with the team.
