In a funeral home, an employee noticed something frightening: a 74-year-old woman who was thought to be dead was still breathing.
A woman (74) has died in a hospice in America – or at least that’s what the facility thought. At the funeral home, an employee noticed that she was still breathing, according to ABC News.
After the shocking discovery, the employee immediately called 911, writes ABC News, citing information from Ben Houchin, Lancaster County Chief Deputy. The funeral home’s staff also performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation. According to Apotheken.de, this means “reviving the victim by means of cardiac massage and artificial respiration.” The woman is now in a hospital.
“It’s a very unusual case,” Houchin is quoted as saying by ABC News. He goes on to say, “We have not been able to establish any criminal intent on the part of the nursing home, but the investigation is ongoing.”
“Hospice work aims to enable dying people to live a dignified and self-determined life until the end,” writes the Federal Ministry of Health.
According to the German Hospice and Palliative Care Association, there are 1,500 outpatient hospice services in Germany, around 260 inpatient hospices for adults and 19 inpatient hospices for children, adolescents and young adults. There are also around 340 palliative care units in hospitals, four of which are for children and adolescents (as of March 3, 2023).
