18 people were injured by a lightning strike in the north of the Czech Republic. According to emergency services, lightning struck the castle park in the city of Liberec on Sunday afternoon during a heavy thunderstorm.

A spokesman for the local emergency services said 18 people were injured on the site in the Vratislavice district, seven of them seriously. According to a hospital spokesman, five people had to be resuscitated. A child was flown by helicopter to a hospital in the capital Prague, 90 kilometers away.

According to the local fire department, lightning struck a tree under which numerous people were standing. According to media reports, an event to mark International Children’s Day was taking place in the park. The Czech Republic was affected by heavy rain and thunderstorms over the weekend.
