According to the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), part-time employment in Germany is at a record level. According to the report, the part-time rate rose to 39.1 percent in the first quarter of 2024 – 0.3 percentage points more than in the same quarter last year. “Never before has the part-time rate been as high in a first quarter as it is now,” said IAB expert Enzo Weber on Wednesday in Nuremberg.

According to IAB calculations, 4.45 million employees had a second job in the first quarter, 2.2 percent more than in the same quarter last year. The number of people with multiple jobs is thus following the long-term upward trend from before the pandemic, it said. The number is now almost 540,000 above the pre-crisis level.

The number of employed people increased slightly to 45.8 million in the first quarter compared to the same period last year. At the same time, working hours per employed person fell by 0.8 percent to 344.5 hours during the period. Except during the Covid-19 pandemic, each individual has never worked so little, but everyone together has never worked so much, explained Weber.
