Two people were killed in the Czech Republic on Wednesday evening when a passenger train collided with a freight train. Dozens of people were injured, said Martin Kavka, spokesman for rail network operator Sprava Zeleznic.

The number of deaths from the accident in Pardubice in the center of the country could still rise. Kavka said on Czech television that the fire brigade was continuing to rescue people from the carriages. According to Kavka, around 200 people were on the passenger train, which was on its way from Prague to the eastern Slovakian city of Kosice. According to the news channel CT24, the accident occurred near the main train station in Pardubice, around 100 kilometers east of the capital Prague.
