Due to the insolvency of the tour operator FTI, a group of mentally disabled holidaymakers have found themselves in trouble – a hotel in Turkey is demanding immediate payment or deduction.

The insolvency of the tour operator FTI has had serious consequences for many holidaymakers. However, it has hit those holidaymakers who have already travelled with FTI particularly hard. An impressive example of this is the case of a group of mentally disabled people who, according to the “Stern” magazine, had to abruptly cut short their all-inclusive stay in a 4-star hotel in the popular Turkish holiday resort of Lara.

When they arrived at the hotel, an employee told them that their accommodation had not yet been paid for by FTI. “It is actually common practice for tour operators to only pay for accommodation after the trip, but she already knew about FTI’s insolvency at the time and therefore asked us to pay the price for the seven nights on site,” tour guide Matthias Suraj told “Stern”.

The group had not known anything about FTI’s insolvency and was completely overwhelmed by the demand. They did not have enough money with them to raise the 12,000 euros demanded, reports “Stern”. Their attempts to negotiate at least one night’s stay in the hotel failed. Either they pay the full price or they have to leave, they were told.

The employees of the FTI emergency hotline in Munich were unable to help the holidaymakers. Fortunately, the employee of the travel agency where they had booked the trip helped. She organized return flights for the entire group, according to “Stern”.

Another vacationer is in a similar situation. Heidemarie S. is currently in Cabarete in the Dominican Republic and is also affected by the consequences of the FTI insolvency. The events she describes are dramatic: “Due to the FTI insolvency, we vacationers are forced to pay our hotel costs of over 1,000 dollars twice,” says the vacationer.

They are threatened with being thrown out of the hotel if they do not pay. They are also denied permission to leave the country if they do not pay.

Many holidaymakers may be unsettled by the insolvency of the tour operator FTI and its subsidiaries 5vorFlug and BigXtra. According to the “Welt” newspaper, those affected can rely on the protection of the German Travel Insurance Fund (DRSF). However, this legal protection only applies to package tours and not to individually booked services such as hotel stays, flights or rental cars.

Even those who have already started their journey would be protected by the DRSF. As the “Welt” newspaper reports, the FTI Group has announced that it will work with the DRSF to arrange the return journey for holidaymakers. If there are difficulties with the return journey or additional overnight stays, travellers can submit the invoices to the DRSF.
