The rail carrier Amtrak is canceling its connection between Montreal and New York until next September to carry out work on the tracks.

The train, named Adirondack, has not reached Montreal since last month, a suspension that was supposed to last until July.

“This service interruption has been pushed back until September 2024,” Amtrak customer service said. Passengers who had a train ticket for the end of summer have just received a notice to this effect.

The train from New York stops at Saratoga Springs in upstate New York.

The train usually takes around 11 hours to travel from Montreal to New York. Some 117,000 passengers used it in 2019.

The Adirondack has had an extremely difficult few years since 2020. Its service was interrupted with the start of the pandemic and did not resume until three years later, in 2023.

Two months later, however, the train was immobilized for weeks: the arrival of warm weather created difficulties on a section of the railway. Canadian legislation required trains to significantly reduce their speed due to the condition of the rail.

Ongoing track repairs should reduce the frequency of these problems, Amtrak said last month.
