Beverly Smith Departs as University of South Carolina Softball Coach

University of South Carolina Athletics Director Ray Tanner announced today that Beverly Smith will not return as the head softball coach for the Gamecocks.

Smith, who took over as Carolina’s softball coach on July 15, 2010, led the team for 14 seasons. During her tenure, the Gamecocks achieved an overall record of 461-323 (.588) and a mark of 102-219 (.318) in the Southeastern Conference. Her 461 wins at South Carolina rank second in school history, following Hall of Fame coach Joyce Compton’s 951 victories.

Under Smith’s guidance, South Carolina made nine post-season appearances, with the highlight being a Super Regional berth in 2018. The team finished that season with a 49-17 overall record and claimed third place in the SEC with a 15-9 mark.

Throughout her time as head coach, Smith coached two NFCA All-Americans, 10 All-SEC players, and 15 All-Region selections. In the most recent season, the Gamecocks finished with a 36-24 overall record and an 8-16 record in SEC play, concluding their season in the NCAA Durham Regional. The team reached as high as 17th in national polls and closed out the regular season with a No. 27 NCAA RPI Ranking.

Since the introduction of the NCAA Softball Championship in 1982, South Carolina’s program has appeared in 24 NCAA Regionals, capturing five regional titles and making three College World Series appearances, the latest being in 1997.
