Athletics’ Joey Estes Loses Perfect Game Bid Against Mariners in Seventh Inning

Updated 10:45 PM PST, June 15, 2023

OAKLAND, California – Joey Estes, a pitcher for the Oakland Athletics, saw his hopes of a perfect game against the Seattle Mariners shattered in the seventh inning on Wednesday night. The 22-year-old right-hander had flawlessly navigated through six innings before surrendering a leadoff double to J.P. Crawford in the seventh. Despite managing to retire the next batter, Josh Rojas, Estes was taken out of the game. He had thrown 78 pitches and recorded five strikeouts.

While there have been 24 perfect games in Major League Baseball history, the most recent one occurred at the Coliseum when the New York Yankees’ Domingo German achieved the feat on June 28, 2023. Estes, who was making his seventh career start, secured his first career win against the Mariners just under a month ago. His journey to the majors included a stint in Triple-A as recently as May 4, following two starts at the highest level last year. Estes had initially debuted in the majors in September last year, coincidentally against the Mariners.

At the time of Estes’ departure, the A’s were leading 2-0, courtesy of a home run by Zack Gelof in the third inning and a run scored by Daz Cameron on a passed ball in the sixth.
