(Ottawa) Canadian customs officers will not strike this week after their union reached a tentative agreement with the federal government.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and the Customs and Immigration Union (CIS) say they have reached an agreement with the government after working “tirelessly”.
The 9,000 members who work for the Canada Border Services Agency were to strike Friday at 12:01 a.m. if they failed to reach an agreement.
A similar strike three years ago nearly paralyzed commercial border traffic and caused significant delays across the country.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada says details of the tentative agreement will be released after it is shared with members on Thursday.
“This is a well-deserved victory for our members at the CBSA who protect our country’s borders and ensure the safety of all Canadians,” said Sharon DeSousa, national president of the PSAC, in a press release. .
Union members must still vote to ratify the agreement.
