A recent incident in Strathcona Park on Vancouver Island left a woman and her dog injured after they were attacked by a cougar. The Ministry of Environment reported that the attack occurred while two women were hiking with their off-leash dogs near Landslide Lake.
During their hike, the group encountered a cougar, which proceeded to attack one of the dogs and bite one of the women. Fortunately, the hikers were able to defend themselves by using bear spray, and were later rescued from the area via helicopter. The injured woman was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment, and both she and her dog are expected to make a full recovery.
Following an investigation by the BC Conservation Officer Service, it was determined that the cougar’s attack was defensive in nature. As a result, no further action will be taken against the cougar. In response to the incident, BC Parks has put up warning signs in the area to alert visitors of potential cougar activity and has temporarily closed the Elk River Trail for safety precautions.
This encounter serves as a reminder of the importance of being cautious and prepared while exploring the wilderness, especially in areas where wildlife is known to inhabit.
