The supermarket chain Kaufland was founded in 1968 and has its headquarters in Neckarsulm, Baden-Württemberg. With around 132,000 employees, Kaufland is part of the Schwarz Group, which also includes Lidl.

Kaufland has stated that the closures do not represent a general trend. The individual stores are closing for economic reasons. The company remains interested in attractive locations and plans to expand its store network.
