A US dermatologist who has more than 1.4 million followers on TikTok explains. She believes that we all shave incorrectly and wants to change that.
Modern shaving requires more than a sharp razor: Mississippi dermatologist Dr. Lindsey Zubritsky claims on the popular social media platform TikTok: You’re all shaving wrong.
As the dermatologist explained in her TikTok post, it is important to shave “in the direction of hair growth.” This tip contradicts the widespread practice of shaving against the grain, which causes skin irritation and microtrauma.
In her video, the expert warns of the consequences of the wrong habit: “Shaving against the direction of hair growth causes microtraumas and cuts in the skin, which leads to more inflammation, irritation and bacteria.”
Dr. Lindsey Zubritsky also emphasizes the importance of using shaving gel or cream during shaving. According to the dermatologist, these products have a stronger lubricating effect, which allows for a smoother shave. Dry shaving is strictly prohibited. In emergencies, a shower gel can also serve as an alternative.
As a third and final tip, the dermatologist recommends exfoliating the area of skin to be shaved at least once or twice a week. Such an exfoliation – ideally with alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids – can remove dead skin cells, open pores and thus prevent bacteria from entering the hair follicles, which could lead to razor bumps.
With her advice on TikTok, Dr. Lindsey Zubritsky wants to contribute to a more skin-friendly shaving routine. Because, as the expert ends her post, “we want a smooth shave without razor burn this summer.”
