(St. Louis) Alexander Steen is set to become the first Swede to serve as general manager of an NHL team, after the St. Louis Blues announced their executive succession plan Thursday.
Steen was named special assistant to general manager Doug Armstrong, with plans to replace him in 2026. The move also came with a three-year extension for Armstrong as president of hockey operations, lasting until in 2029.
Armstrong has been with the Blues since 2008 and has served as general manager since 2010. He has built a team that has made the playoffs in 10 of the last 13 years and won the Stanley Cup in 2019.
Steen, who was part of that championship team during his playing career, which lasted from 2005 to 2021, joined the Blues management as an advisor and development coach last year.
He should thus become the second European general manager in the history of the NHL, after Jarmo Kekalainen with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
