(Cologne) Switzerland resisted Hungary’s comeback attempt and won 3-1 on Saturday at the Euro.
Goals from Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer — two surprising choices in the starting lineup — allowed Switzerland to take control in the first half. However, a profitable header from Barnabas Varga brought Hungary back into contention.
Breel Embolo confirmed Switzerland’s victory by scoring on the counterattack with a lob over the goalkeeper during stoppage time at the end of the game.
In just his second game for Switzerland, Duah opened the scoring following a pass from Aebischer with a low shot that beat goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.
Aebischer widened the gap just before half-time. He broke free from Attila Fiola on the edge of the penalty area and covered a low shot beyond Gulacsi’s reach.
Varga gave the Hungarian fans a little celebration in the 66th minute, scoring with a header following a cross from Dominik Szoboszlai.
Hungary continued to apply pressure on the Swiss defence afterwards but were unable to score another goal.
Switzerland is second in Group A behind Germany, who defeated Scotland 5-1 in the tournament opener on Friday. Hungary suffered their first loss in a competitive match since September 2022.
