Tens of thousands of fans from Italy and Albania celebrated a peaceful football party on Saturday before the European Championship match in Dortmund. However, the police had to prevent an outbreak of violence.
A police operation in Dortmund city centre prevented an attack by Italian supporters on Albanian fans on Saturday before the European Championship match between Italy and Albania. “Over 50 people have been taken into police custody to consider further measures,” Dortmund police announced on Saturday evening.
According to information from the “Ruhr Nachrichten”, the police had been observing the well-known “high-risk fans” for a long time beforehand and had seen how they deliberately masked themselves and armed themselves for the attack on around 30 Albanians. “Thanks to their consistent intervention, the police officers present prevented a direct confrontation,” the report states.
Apart from this incident, the police spoke in the evening of “tens of thousands of peaceful football fans who created an international atmosphere in the city throughout the day”.
