(Pinehurst) Bryson DeChambeau delivered another memorable finish on the 18th hole at Pinehurst No. 2 to win the U.S. Open for the second time in his career on Sunday.
In a final hour of play in which there were more mistakes than plays, DeChambeau capped off an exciting week by leaving the bunker 55 yards and scoring a short par to hand over a card of 71 (plus-1).
Payne Stewart holed a 15-foot par putt on the final hole in 1999 at the first U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. He beat Phil Mickelson by a blow.
Trying to end a 10-year drought without a major tournament victory, McIlroy led by two strokes while sitting on the 14th tee.
The Northern Irishman was leading by one shot when he missed a putt from just over two feet for par on the 16th flag. He then missed a putt from less than four feet for par on the 18th hole.
From the official scorer’s room, McIlroy watched as DeChambeau got out of a bad position after his tee shot on the 18th hole and left the bunker to make the winning putt.
DeChambeau won the United States Open by six strokes on the Winged Foot Golf Club course in 2020.
