Many holidaymakers walk to the beach lightly dressed and stop off at the supermarket, for example, on the way. Not everyone feels comfortable with this. An Italian holiday island has therefore now tightened the dress code.
Favignana is tightening its dress code. According to “heute.at”, it is now forbidden to enter the town center in swimwear or even topless on the Italian island off the coast of Sicily. This applies until September 30, as Mayor Francesco Forgione made clear. Anyone who disregards these instructions can expect a fine of between 25 and 150 euros.
Tourists who want to visit sights such as the Florio Palace and the old tuna factory are also affected by this regulation. Both the local police and security personnel are monitoring compliance with the new dress code.
This is a question of decency, says Forgione. He continues: “What we are asking for is a minimum level of respect.” He then asks: “Where is the scandal?” After all, in the capital Rome it is not allowed to walk through the city center without covering your upper body.
Favignana is following the example of other holiday resorts such as Lignano, which have already introduced similar regulations. There it is now forbidden to wear a bikini or swimming shorts “in public or publicly accessible places, with the exception of children under twelve years of age and with the exception of the beach promenade and the lagoon.” This is reported by the “Frankfurter Rundschau”. In Lignano, the municipality has imposed fines of 25 euros or more for violations. Repeat offenders must pay up to 500 euros.
In addition, wearing swimwear in public is prohibited in Lerici. According to the “Merkur”, drying your beach towel on the balcony is also considered a violation of the rules.
