A woman orders expensive bikinis online from a not exactly cheap shop. When unpacking, a hygiene sticker from a cheap supplier falls out of the packaging.
Niamh from Cardiff, known on TikTok as “niamhelonidoyle”, shared a surprising experience with her fans. She ordered three bikinis from the brand “Motel Rock” online, worth £150 (€177). When she opened the package, she noticed a hygiene sticker from the cheap brand “Shein”, as she reported indignantly on TikTok: “I am shocked. You spend £150 on ‘Motel Rock’ bikinis and you get ‘Shein’,” she says.
The video sparked outrage among her TikTok followers, with some advising people to do a reverse search before purchasing an item of clothing to make sure the same product isn’t available from a cheaper brand for a fraction of the price.
“Before you put something in your shopping cart, save a picture of the item and then flip the image over and see if you get results for ‘Fashionova’ or ‘Shein’,” advises another user. Other brands have already been accused of buying “wholesale” from “Shein” and then selling the clothes for many times the price, noted another woman,
According to the Daily Mail, which tells Namh’s story, Motel Rocks insists that her case was a “warehouse error.”
Shein is a global B2C fast-fashion brand that mainly sells clothing and accessories. The company was founded in 2008 and is headquartered in China. Shein is particularly known for its online presence and uses social media and influencer marketing to target a younger audience. The brand is also often criticized, particularly because of concerns about sustainability and working conditions in the production chain.
